The machine comprises an endless belt for the displacement of the carpet and a head for washing the latter, the head having multiple circular brushes, preferably of small diameter, for frontal action on the carpet, being grouped together and rotating in opposite directions and having means for varying the pressure of the brushes on the carpet and for transverse displacement with variable speed in terms of the to-and-fro (reciprocal) motion of the carriage with respect to the carpet. The brush-carrier carriage is supported on a guidance device on flat plates arranged transversely with respect to the conveyor belt, being supplemented with crosspieces parallel to said plates for receiving rollers for lateral guidance of the carriage in the to-and-fro displacement transverse to the carpet. <IMAGE>
