A method for liquid crystal alignment by applying a polarized ultraviolet light or electron beams onto a thin film of a polymer provided on a substrate in a certain direction relative to the substrate to align liquid crystals by using the substrate without rubbing, wherein the thin film comprises a polyimide resin comprising repeating units represented by general formula (I) (wherein R1 represents a tetravalent organic group having an alicyclic structure and R2 represents a divalent organic group) and prepared by the dehydration and ring closure of a polyimide precursor having a reduced viscosity of 0.05 to 3.0 dl/g (in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone at 30 °C in a concentration of 0.5 g/dl).
|
