A container or tray (10) for growing, planting and transplanting plants, which has a plurality of growing compartments (13) arranged in adjacent rows (12). Each growing compartment (13) is formed by four walls (14, 16, 18, 20). An air opening (24) is located adjacent to each wall (14, 16, 18, 20) of each growing compartment (13). The walls (14, 16, 18, 20) of the growing compartments (13) are offset at a non-right angle with respect to the major axis of the tray. Air slits (50, 52) are formed in the walls of the growing compartments (13). The bottoms of the growing compartments (13) have openings (40), each with a pair of ledges (42, 44) adjacent thereto so that the root ball of the plates may be aerated while holding the plants within the growing compartment (13). The center-to-center spacing between adjacent growing compartments (13) is the same throughout the tray (10).
