In a gas generator (10) for producing pressurised gas to inflate an airbag, with a combustion chamber (11) in which there is a solid combustible propellant (16), a pressurised fluid in a pressure chamber (12), a bursting diaphragm (23) which closes off a discharge aperture (22) in the pressure chamber (12) and thus prevents the premature discharge of the pressurised fluid from the pressure chamber (12), and an ignition device (18) in the region of the combustion chamber (11) to ignite the propellant (16) where the combustion chamber (11) is arranged outside the pressure chamber (12) in front of the discharge aperture (22) and has at least one nozzle aperture (20) directed towards the bursting diaphragm (23), the oulets (25) are arranged between the discharge aperture (22) and one or more nozzle apertures (20) towards the airbag and constructed in a discharge sleeve (24) fitted between the combustion and pressure chambers (11, 12). The hot propellant gas from the combustion chamber (11) can be directed and focussed through the nozzle apertures (20) on the bursting diaphragm (23). The discharge sleeve (24) permits modular construction and at the same time acts as a spacer between the combustion and pressure chambers (11, 12).
