Method of determining whether engine preheating has succeeded before starting an internal combustion engine

The method involves evaluating the difference between the engine temp. and an induction temp. and comparing it with a defined minimum value. If the minimum value is exceeded the external temp. is taken into account in assessing the success of the pre-heating if the engine has been idle for a long period without being started. The method can determine whether engine pre-heating using coolant heated by the engine can be used successfully. The heating device is a heating source acting on the engine block.
