The device inspects and tests a vessel opening especially an end surface (19) of a vessel (F). The device includes an illuminating device (1) to illuminate the opening (12). An imaging device (2,3,4) which has at least one camera device (4) forms an optical image of the opening. A control device (5) with a memory (6) controls at least the illumination and/or the optical imaging. The illuminating device (1) and the imaging device (2,3,4) are formed such that at least part of the end surface (19) can be imaged in the reflection of the light of the illuminating device (1). The imaging device may have several primary optical elements formed especially for forming an image at a shallow angle relative to the end surface.
