The image for reproduction is decomposed into elementary coloured surfaces (24) which are arranged in a predetermined manner (22). The colour of each elementary surface is selected from predetermined groups of basic colours and three or more shades for each basic colour. The composition of elementary coloured surfaces is printed on to a support using inks whose colours reproduce the selected base colours and shades after taking account of the support colour. The shade of base colour allocated to a given elementary surface is obtained by varying the proportion of each ink on the support elementary surface.
