<p>PURPOSE:To enable recognition of a shape of an object accurately and with a high identifiability from a short range to a relative long range by generating a histogram of a amplitude distribution from a reception signal of a pulse type reflected wave. CONSTITUTION:A transmission wave TW by a pulse signal with a fixed width is radiated into the air from a transmitter 1 and reflected wave RW from an object O is received 2 to determine a data of a histogram of an amplitude distribution of the reception signal thereof with a waveform processing circuit 3. The data is compared sequentially with a data of a histogram of several types of objects with known shapes registered in a sample data memory 4 to judge 5 the shape of the object by the coincidence between the data, which enables easy and accurate recognition of the shape of the object O. It also should be noted that this apparatus does not recognize the shape of the object O directly from a waveform characteristic of the reception signal. This eliminates the need for narrowing the transmission wave TW to make the waveform characteristic noticeable and thus, when an ultrasonic type is used as the transmitter 1 and a receiver 2, the shape of a distant object can be recognized even in the air in the order of several m to 10 and several m.</p> |
