PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a microtome which makes a sample to be small in thickness by improving the accuracy of inching mechanism. SOLUTION: An X-Y axis stage 3 and a tilt stage 4 are provided on one side in an X-axis direction on a stand 2, a cutter holding base 5 for holding a cutter 6 is provided on the stage 4. In addition, an inching mechanism 7 is provided on the other side in the X-axis direction thereon, and a sample holder loading arm 12 for holding a sample 14 and a Z-axis stage 11 are provided on the mechanism 7. Then the mechanism 7 is provided with a first linear motor stage 8 and a second linear motor stage 9 with a Y axis in between at a crossing angle of 2θ. When the stages 8 and 9 are moved at the crossing angle as it is, the sample 14 moves only a minute distance in the X direction, so that an ultra-thin slice can be prepared.
