PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new o-methyltransferase capable of transforming a halogenated phenol said to be carcinogenic into a comparatively harmless halogenated anisole by isolation the enzyme from microorganismic cells or a microorganism culture fluid. SOLUTION: This enzyme which has an activity to catalyze the o-methylation of a halogenated phenol into a halogenated anisole and is obtained by cultivation of Trichoderma virgatum ATCC 24961, etc., is a halogenated phenol o- methyltransferase having the following properties: (1) having substrate specificity to halogenated phenols, esp. mono-, di- and trihalogenated phenols; (2) having the optimum pH around 8.5; (3) having the optimum action temperature at 40 to 50 deg.C. It is possible to prevent the development of offensive odor by transforming 2,4,6-trichlorophenol useful as an antifungal agent for wood into 2,4,6-trichloroanisole and removing the latter. |
