PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ischemic brain disease improving agent, having excellent improving activity on memory disturbance in study by compounding a specific compound separated from Hericium erinaceum. SOLUTION: This agent contains a compound of the formula (R is a residue of palmitic acid, stearic acid or linoleic acid, whose carboxyl group is removed) as an active component. Three kinds of compounds of the formula are obtained by the following process. Raw or dried fruit bodies of Hericium erinaceum are extracted with a homogeneous solvent system consisting of water and an organic solvent, the extraction mixture is subjected to solid-liquid separation such as filtration to collect the extraction liquid, and the organic solvent is removed by evaporation from the extraction liquid to obtain an aqueous phase. Subsequently, the aqueous phase is subjected to liquid-liquid partitioning extraction with a mixed system of water, and an organic solvent to fractionally collect an organic solvent layer, and the organic solvent is removed by evaporation from the organic solvent layer to obtain a dried solid. The dried solid is subsequently treated by fractional chromatography and further subjected to a re-fractionation treatment to isolate each of the three compounds. The three kinds of benzyl alcohol derivatives each can be formulated into an oral agent such as a tablet, granules, a powdery preparation or a capsule, or a parenteral agent such as an injection, a liquid agent for eye drop or a suppository. |
