In the production of pompoms, a continuous yarn (3) is drawn from a supply bobbin (5) to constrict the basic fibre material at intervals at a bonding station. The yarn is wound round in a number of predetermined coils at the bonding point. The continuous yarn is carried over between two successive bondings (A-B), before cutting. The fibre material is advanced in steps, to bring a bonding point into the bonding station, where it is stopped for a number of coils to be wound round it. Also claimed is an assembly with a fixed point (2) for the incoming feed of the material (M) of a number of yarns or filaments, where it is fed in steps through a station where a continuous yarn is wound round in a set number of coils, to give a constriction. The material is cut between two constricted points to give the basic pompom to be opened out. Preferably at a fixed point (2) the incoming material (M) is fed in a step-by-step movement. At the bonding station, a continuous yarn (3) is wound round it by a given number of coils, to give a local constriction. The material is then advanced by a step, for the process to be repeated. The material is finally cut on both sides of the constricted zone before being opened out into the pompom structure.
