The method is for measuring stroke of a cylinder of a cylinder-piston unit (10) that is retractable under the operation of an incompressible control medium. The cylinder has a slidably laid piston connected to a piston rod (16). Each cylinder together with the control medium is fillable and, on one side, the cylinder chamber (11,21,31) is limited by pistons. The factor M by which the chamber is limited is determined by the ratio of the maximum stroke (S1,S2,S3) of the piston to the maximum volume (V1,V2,V3) of the cylinder chamber. There is a device to measure the volume or the mass of the cylinder chamber's supplied control medium. The measured volume or mass is multiplied by the factor M.
