The steering column unit has a carrier (3) for a latching roller (4) that moves along a profiled cam surface in the main housing. The carrier reacts against a central plunger that is axially spring loaded. Supported on a pivot point is a release bar (10) that projects through an aperture and interacts with a release disc (12). The switch actuator (5) is integral with the carrier guide (2). The carrier is also moved in a direction at right angles.
