PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the subject compound for the raw material of an alkyd resin, etc., by reacting 2-hexanal with formaldehyde in the presence of a prescribed amount of an 1-4C alcohol and an alkali metal hydroxide in a heterogeneous system. CONSTITUTION:Formaldehyde is reacted with 2-ethylhexanal in the presence of an 1-4C alcohol (One or more alcohols selected from methanol, ethanol, isopropanol and butanol are especially preferable.) in an amount of >=2wt.%, preferably >=5wt.% based on 2-ethylhexanal as the raw material and an alkali metal oxide in a heterogeneous system, preferably at 40-80 deg.C to obtain 2-n- butyl-2-ethyl-1,3-propanediol. The alcohol added to the reaction system can remarkably accelerate the reaction. The resultant compound is useful as the raw material of a polyurethane, polyester, etc. |
