The electrodes (1,2) are flat plates substantially parallel to each other at the ends of power conductors (5). The free ends of the plates carry points between which an arc is struck by overvoltage. The upper electrode (1) is pivotable about an axis (3) to vary the distance between the points. The flows of current (6) in the two electrodes are 180 degrees out of phase and in opposite directions so that their magnetic fields produce mutual repulsion which drives the electrodes apart. After arc extinction the movable electrode is restored to its original position by a spring (19). |
