PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve running characteristics, to reduce the generation of a harmful discharge substance and a smell of polluted exhaust gas, and consumption of fuel, and to keep the layer state of a combustion chamber in an excellent state. SOLUTION: An internal combustion comprises an engine block of which a cylinder 46 having a long axis 66, an upper end, and the cross area of a plane vertical to the long axis; a piston 90 reciprocating in the cylinder along the long axis and having an upper surface; and a cylinder head 110 having an under surface part 114 to close the upper end of the cylinder. An under surface part is extended approximately vertically to the long axis. A recessed part 122 extending upward is formed in the under surface part. The recessed part has an upper end, a lower end, and height. The lower end of the recessed part has the area of a plane vertical to the long axis. The area is equal to approximate 1/5 of the cross section area of the cylinder. The height is equal to at least 1/3 of the diameter of the cylinder. Further, the internal combustion engine comprises a fuel injection device 126; and an ignition plug 142.
