PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately estimate a fuel characteristic by calculating a basic fuel injection amount based on engine torque and an engine rotational speed and comparing the basic fuel injection amount with a fuel injection amount calculated based on the operational position of a fuel injection amount adjusting mechanism so as to estimate the characteristic of fuel. SOLUTION: During running of a diesel engine, in a control unit 31, a speed ratio of a torque converter is calculated and engine torque is calculated based on a capacity factor retrieved from a table corresponding to the speed ratio and the rotational speed of a torque converter input shaft. A basic fuel injection amount Qb experimentally calculated under a standard running condition beforehand is retrieved based on this engine torque and the engine rotational speed. Then, a target fuel injection amount Q2 corresponding to a target control sleeve position is inputted as a fuel injection amount detected from the operational position of the fuel injection adjusting mechanism, a difference between these amounts Qb and Q2 is calculated as a fuel characteristic factor and a fuel characteristic is retrieved based on this factor and the engine rotational speed. |
