PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compound which is a specific 4-isoxazolin-3- one derivative, hating excellent herbicidal activities without causing phytotoxicity to rice plants and useful as a herbicide, etc., in paddy fields, plowlands, orchards, pastures, turfs, forests or non-crop lands. SOLUTION: This new 4-isoxazolin-3-one derivative is represented by formula I [R is a 1-4C alkyl; X and Y are each 1 to 3 substituent groups such as H, a halogen, a 1-3C alkyl, a 1-3C alkoxy, a 1-3C alkylthio, phenyl, nitro, cyano or trifluoromethyl] [e.g. 2-(4-chloro-α,α-dimethylbenzyl)-5-methyl-4-phenyl-4- isoxazolin-3-one] and is useful as a herbicide, etc., having strong herbicidal activities without causing phytotoxicity to rice plants. The compound represented by formula I is obtained by carrying out the dehydrating condensation of a 3-hydroxyisoxazole represented by formula II with anα,α-dimethylbenzyl alcohol represented by formula III in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
