A device for protecting data stored on a medium (30) of which the contents may be altered by a magnetic field is disclosed. The device comprises a housing for said medium and a sensing means for transmitting a sensing signal when the housing is tampered with. Erasing means (14) include a current generator (9) supplying power to coils (81, 82) to generate a magnetic field around said medium. The erasing means apply a current to the turns of the coils when the sensing signal is transmitted so that a magnetic field is generated and the data is erased. The turns are arranged on either side of the data medium and can generate magnetic fields having substantially the same polarity on either side of said medium.
