Pump priming box with dam

The priming device protects a pump which is not self-priming by not letting it run dry. It has a closed box or housing interposed in the horizontal pipeline (6,7). The box is rectangular with an arched roof. Water flowing into the box strikes a sloping dam (9) whose top edge (10) is level with the top of the pipe. There is a filler cap (11) in the curved roof (5) to assist in initial priming of the pump. There is a drain connection (12) near the bottom of the box, downstream of the dam.
