The light sources provided give off light in all directions. If a light sour ce at the edge of a planiform lamp which radiates into t he lamp is attached or imbedded at the edge, it is apparent that a large portio n of the light at the edge of the surface to be illumina ted leaves the lamp (visible as a bright edge etc.). This effect occurs in all known ar rangements because in this region the light strikes the surface with a smaller angle than the angle of total reflection, and for the most pa rt exits. This natural characteristic considerably limit s the use of radiated light for the lighting effect in the entire area of the lamp. An es sential major feature of this patent application is how to compensate for this effect and thus the possibility of using the portion of light norma lly ignored in known applications.
