A guide (10) leading to a deflector edge has an extension. A transfer roller is situated near the deflector edge. Drive elements move the backing (22) running over the transfer roller on the other side of the gap between the deflector edge and the transfer roller, for transferring the detached labels (24) in the pre-set direction of travel. The backing strip is driven along a first guide and deflected on a sharp first deflector edge (18) to form a loop. Close to the first deflector edge, a second deflector edge deflects the backing strip in the guide running in the original direction of travel.
