The system comprises a switch which reacts to the full depression of the accelerator and sends a signal to an electronic gear selector unit to change gear. The accelerator pedal (12) is connected through a linkage (14) and a wire cable (16) to the throttle flap and a potentiometer (18) which delivers a signal to the electronic gear selection unit (20). A kick-down switch (28) detects full depression of the accelerator pedal which is transmitted to the electronic unit.
