PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the using efficiency of an ATM switch which can cope with even such an asymmetrical case where the number of input and output interface circuits are different from each other by using the input/output terminals of an ATM switch module as the input or output terminals. SOLUTION: The optical signals sent from the intra-device optical fibers 1801 to 180k are received by the input interface circuits of input/output interface circuits 1701 to 170k , and the cells are inputted to an ATM switch module 100 from the input/output terminals 1601 to 160k . The input/output switch circuits 1401 to 140k are notified of the types of interfaces of the circuits 1701 to 170k by an interface circuit identification circuit 150 via the control signal lines 1451 to 145k . Then the circuits 1401 to 140k send the cells received from the input interface circuits of circuits 1701 to 170k to an input configuration circuit 120 via the terminals 1601 to 160k .
