A method of seasoning lumber without the occurrence of cracks or warps by raising the turnover ratio of the dryer. In the first step, the lumber is placed into a pressure vessel, and after unifying the temperature within the lumber by charging and discharging of saturated steam in the vessel and fluctuating the steam pressure for pressurizing, the saturated steam maintaining the unified temperature in the vessel is discharged, and by boiling and evaporating the water contained in every tissue of the lumber, it is formed into a state that can be seasoned uniformly. Secondly, the lumber is seasoned by discharging the free water contained in the lumber removed from the pressure vessel. Thirdly, the lumber of which free water is evaporated is placed back into the pressure vessel, and by forming the current of the superheated steam within the vessel, the lumber is pressurized and heated, thus eliminating the contained water. The invention provides no moisture content gradient and no tendency to form moisture content gradient in the lumber.
