PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject fiber low in drop-off of mechanical strength in an oxygen atmosphere, thus useful for e.g. filter media for trapping diesel engine exhaust particulates, so designed as to specify the composition of the surface layer of the oxygen-contg. silicon carbide fiber. SOLUTION: This heat-resistant silicon carbide fiber is so designed as to bring the oxygen content of the surface layer (pref. about 0.5μm thick) of the silicon carbide fiber having the composition: Si-Ti-C-O or Si-C-O to a level lower than that at the center of the fiber (namely: to <=10wt.%). This can be accomplished, for example, by forming a carbon film on the surface of the original silicon carbide fiber followed by baking.
