<p>A liquid crystal composition comprising a first component of at least one member selected among 4-substituted benzonitrile liquid crystal compounds having a positive anisotropy of dielectric constant, a second component of liquid crystal compounds having a negative or weakly positive anisotropy of dielectric constant, and a chiral component A of an optically active compound represented by general formula (X-a) or (X-b), wherein R0 represents an alkyl or alkoxy group having one to ten carbon atoms; X represents a halogen atom or CN; and Y represents an alkyl group having one to ten carbon atoms or a hydrogen atom. A liquid crystal composition can be provided which, while satisfying property requirements for TN-LCD and STN-LCD display systems, has a low viscosity from the viewpoints of coping with quick response, a high clearing point for coping with changes in environment temperature, and a low temperature dependence of pitch length.</p> |
