Flexible insulating sensing mats (10), laid under the outer covers (3) of e.g. automobile seats (41, 42), carry electrodes at several levels, forming a regular pattern over the supporting surface, except where stitching is required. All electrodes are connected to integrated circuits processors programmed to connect selected electrode groups successively to injection, measurement and guard potentials. In one mode, the presence of a passenger, or an object, on the seat is detected by the associated capacitance change alone; in the other, the passenger`s or object`s weight alters the capacitance between two superimposed electrodes by compressing the resilient separating dielectric.
