The individual timer makes use of a horizontal conductive strip projecting horizontally from the poles that mark the start and finish of the ski course. The horizontal strip strikes the skier's ski sticks as they pass the marker pole. The ski sticks have two conductive strips (23,24) running along the upper part of the ski stick, separated by an insulator. When the conductive strip on the marker pole hits the ski stick, it bridges the conductors, providing transient connection between them. A timer circuit is controlled by the transient switching. The timer can be fitted to the top of the ski stick or worn on the skier's wrist. A liquid crystal display associated with the timer shows the elapsed time for each run.
