Synthesis of alkyl tert.-butyl ethers comprises (a) reacting a 4-10C tert. alcohol with a 1-6C prim. alcohol over a pentasil zeolite catalyst having a silica/alumina ratio of 50-15:1, opt. in the presence of a Gp.III or IV element oxide as binder, (b) continuously contacting the prim. and tert. alcohols in a molar amt. of 10-1:1-10 at 80-200 deg C and from 1 atmos. to 1000 psig.
