A filter unit has a cylindrical casing (20) with closed (25) and open (24) ends, the latter having an external thread (26) with adjacent annular groove (27) carrying an O-ring seal (71). The top plate (30) has a matching internal thread with adjacent seal and sealing surfaces. The inlet and outlet pass through the top plate. The upper plate is prevented from rotating with respect to the filter mount, being secured to the mount. There is a section with tubular form for attachment of the upper plate, a pilot or guide end with internal thread, on which the outer thread of the filter mount is screwed and an outlet, extending through the connecting section. The hollow cylindrical filter element (50) is replaceable, with incoming flow external to it, within the casing. One end is open for exiting flow, the other closed. The outer diameter is smaller than the internal diameter of the casing, facilitating removal. When screwed together, a continuous, sealed flow path is defined.
