The roof is made from a layer of insulating material (5) laid over a supporting surface (1, 2, 3) and held in place e.g. by adhesive (4), and metal sheets (25) which are held in place by fastenings. The metal sheet fastenings are in the form of rigid metal plates (8) with turned-over toothed edges (10, 11, 12, 13) which are driven into the insulation layer and fitted with clips to hold the metal sheets in place. The dimensions of the rigid plates are such that the exterior stresses on the metal sheets are distributed without distorting the insulation layer, made e.g. from cellular glass. The insulation layer can be covered with a coating or layer of a waterproofing material, e.g. bituminous, which goes both under and over the fastening plates.
