PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the automatic focusing method which can put a camera such as a television camera in focus on a closer subject on a photographic picture plane. SOLUTION: Focusing areas are provided at the center part and both side parts on the photographic picture plane, and focus evaluated values are detected in both those areas and the entire area. According to the focus evaluated value of either area, a focus lens is moved under ascent control and set at a focusing position (S10). Then the focus lens is moved by a fine quantity from the focusing position in the short-distance direction or finite-distance direction (S12), the increse/decrease tendencies of the focus evaluated values in the focusing areas at the center part and both side parts on the photographic picture plane are detected (S14), and it is judged whether a subject is on more on the short- distance side than the subject in focus from the increase/decrease tendencies (S16). When it is judged that the subject on the short-distance side, the position of the focus lens is adjusted according to the focus evaluated value in the focusing area (S18) and the lens is put in focus on the subject which is positioned on the short-distance side. |
