PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control the magnitude of pretilt angles in a wide range with a simple stage and to make it possible to obtain liquid crystal cells of diversified modes by subjecting a first substrate to an alignment layer treatment by rubbing to impart alignment stability to liquid crystals and subjecting a second substrate to a treatment by light alignment to improve its alignment stability. SOLUTION: The first substrate 1 coated with a first alignment layer 8 consisting of polyimide or the like is subjected to the rubbing treatment, by which at least one of the first pretilts are determined. The second substrate 2 coated with a second alignment layer 9 consisting of a polysiloxane material is subjected to light alignment, by which at least one of the second pretilts are determined. A liquid crystal layer is formed between the first substrate 1 and the second substrate 2. The liquid crystals thereof eventually have diversified alignment structures by the angles and directions of the first pretilts and the second pretilts. The second alignment layer 9 of the second substrate 2 is subjected to the light alignment in place of the rubbing alignment, by which the problems occurring in the rubbing are decreased. Since the alignment stability of the first pretilts is excellent, the stability of the second pretilts may be imparted to the cells. |
