PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scanning optical device capable of saving the space, making the whole device compact, instantaneously switching a shutter, and executing high speed response by eliminating the necessity of a place for arranging a mechanical shutter mechanism. SOLUTION: The device is provided with plural light sources, plural light modulators, plural light deflectors, plural Fθlenses, and a casing for holding plural optical elements including the light deflectors and the fθlenses in its inside in a sealed state shielded from the external atmosphere. At least one of an incident window for incidence of optical beams emitted from plural light sources and a emission window for emitting optical beams deflected by the light deflectors in a main scanning direction is constituted of a liquid crystal shutter for passing the optical paths of all optical beams at the time of scanning exposure and shielding the optical paths of all optical beams in an exposure stand-by state other than the scanning exposure.
