PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To approximate the motion of an object in an image by relating plural motion vectors with an image block and selecting any optimum motion compensating system out of plural candidates while using these motion vectors. SOLUTION: Predictive images in each block are synthesized while using the motion vectors at four grid points positioned at the apexes of that block. When a block 201 is considered, for example, the motion vectors at four grid points of grid points 203-206 are used. Thus, four grid points can be related to all the blocks in the image. Plural methods can be considered for performing motion compensation while using four grid points but as one of these methods, there is a method for selecting one of four grid points and defining the motion vector at that grid point as the motion vector of the entire block. Besides, the average value of motion vectors at four grid points can be defined as the motion vector of the block as well. |
