PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the efficiency of user's navigation work in a hypermedia system driven in a network environment by retrieving information stored in a directory information storing means in accordance with a client's request and returning the retrieved information to the client. SOLUTION: The client 10, plural, servers 11 for storing contents files and a directory server 12 for concentrically managing information related to the contents files are connected through a network. The server 12 is provided with a directory information storing part 121 and a retrieving part 122. The storing part 121 stores the node identifier(ID) of each node managed by each server 11, the contents of a contents file to be a node and information related to the linking relation of nodes. The retrieving part 122 retrieves the information stored in the storing part 121 in accordance with a request from the client 10 and returns the retrieved information to the client 10.
