PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an agent for orientating a liquid crystal, used for forming a liquid crystal display element having excellent liquid crystal orientation capability by using a polyamic acid produced through the reaction of specified teracarboxylic acid dianhydrides and specified diamine compound, or an imide polymer derived from the polyamic acid. SOLUTION: This agent for orienting a liquid crystal contains at least one polymer selected from a polyamic acid obtained by reacting the below-mentioned components A and B, and an imide polymer obtained by subjecting the polyamic acid to ring closure through dehydration. A component A comprises a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride represented by formula I and a dianhydride of a tetracarboxylic acid containing a cyclobutane ring, represented by formula II. A component B comprises a phenylenediamine compound represented by formula III (wherein (a) is 0 to 4), a diamine compound represented by formula IV (wherein R<6> is CH2 , a group of formula V, a group of formula VI, etc.; R<7> and R<8> are each a halogen, an alkyl, etc.; and (b) and (c) are each 0 to 4), and a diamine compound having a steroid skeleton, represented by the formula, H2 N-R<9> -NH2 (wherein R<9> is a divalent organic group having a steroid skeleton). |
