Plants are grown in a granulate of porous concrete produced from a mixture of: 10% quartz sand; > 10% lime; 1-10% cement; 1-10% natural gypsum; 1% aluminium powder; and > 10% water. The mixture is formed as required and allowed to set. Granules are preferably 5-15 mm in size and are made from porous concrete waste from the manufacture of porous concrete blocks or slabs. The granulate may also be used as a layer on a flat roof in which e.g. grass can be grown to form a `green' roof covering.
