<p>A hard drive optimization function (108) is provided to the set-up utility (106) of the basic input/output service (BIOS) of a computer system. When executed, the optimization function (108) benchmarks the hard drive's overall performance with random accesses employing various access block sizes. In one embodiment, the optimization function (108) determines the optimal access block size by comparing the average througput (kbytes/sec) (128) for a number of access block sizes. The average throughput (128) for each access block size is determined through a number of random accesses made using the access block size. The access block sizes and the number of accesses made for each access block size are systematically synthesized in accordance to a number of benchmarking parameters (112).</p> |
