The invention relates to a process and a device for manufacturing a metal container with a longitudinal weld, in particular a sheet steel container. During said process a cylindrical shell (body) (12) is formed by bending a flat metal plate, and the adjacent or overlapping striking edges of said shell are connected securely to each other by lock-seaming or welding. A disc-shaped bottom and, optionally, a corresponding top is welded or lock-seamed to the cylindrical shell (12) to form a closed container such as a bung barrel or to form a container open at the top such as a cover barrel. To eliminate bulges in the material, irregularities or sharp edges in the region of the longitudinal weld, rolling is carried out across the entire length of the sheet metal shell after lock-seaming or after welding and before attaching the bottom and, optionally, the top.
