PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect characters with high accuracy by detecting characters based on the absolute density of picture elements as to an outer edge of the characters and detecting characters based on a density difference of picture element as to the inside of the character edge. SOLUTION: Circuits from an MTF correction circuit 1 to an AND circuit 8 are used to detect an outer edge of a character. The result is stored in an effective signal generating section 15. Circuits from differential circuits 9, 10 to a comparator 14 detect an inner edge of a character with processing density. A character area is decided and outputted based on an AND output of the comparator 14 and a valid signal generating section 15 and an output of an AND 8. |
