The ignition coil has a magnetic column shaped element (10) with several magnetic plates (MP) stacked together. Stacked or toothed sections are formed at least at the opposite end of the column shaped element (10). Each magnetic plate is a flat plate whose opposite ends are wider than the middle. The width of the middle section of each plate increases gradually from the magnetic plates at the ends of the column to those in the middle. This forms the middle of the column element with an essentially circular cross-section. The opposite ends of the column have a cross-section with a surface larger than the middle section. A primary winding (12) and a secondary winding (22) are wound around the middle section of the column shaped element (10). A magnetic cylindrical element receives the columnar element (10) with the primary and secondary windings. A magnetic cylindrical housing receives the cylindrical element and the columnar element.
