A side dam (10) for caster defining a mold in which molten metal is cast into a metal product. The side dam includes a frame (59), an orbiting chain (62) and a plurality of elements (60) connected to the chain. The elements each include a carrier (100) connected to the chain and a block (115) mounted to the carrier. The element further includes a spring (200) or other biasing member for urging the block toward an outer edge of the solidifying molten metal in the mold. An associated method of casting molten metal is also disclosed.
