摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal device excellent in heat resistance, fast in response time and capable of maintenaning sufficiently high contrast at the time of being used within the range from room temp. to a high temp. by specifying a polycyclic liquid crystal material, its swelling ratio and its domain size diameter respectively. SOLUTION: This device is composed by interposing a composite film L between a pair of electrically conductive substrates D and joining the composite film L to the both substrates D. At this time, as the structure of the composite film L, a structure in which the inside of each of continuous pores of a support film L1 consisting of a polymer matrix is filled with a liquid crystal material L2 , or a structure in which the liquid crystal material L2 is dispersed in a particulate state in another support film L3 consisting of a polymer matrix can be adopted. As the liquid crystal material used as a constituent of the composite film L, a polycyclic liquid crystal material having three to four benzene rings or cyclohexane rings in its skeleton can be used. Also, this liquid crystal material has a <=20% swelling ratio at a temp. in the range from room temp. to 150 deg.C and <=4μm domain size in diameter.
