In manufacturing a sheathed wire electric heating element hav ing a terminal lead 1 the terminal lead 1 is formed with a screw thread 2 prior tc assembly in the sheath for filling with refrac tory powder 9 anc compacting, and is provided with a protective silicone covering over the threaded portion, the covering decomposing during annealing of the element without impairing the powder filling. Preferably the terminal lead is made from a 70% Ni-30% Cu alloy, the sheath is of mild steel, the refractory filling is magnesium oxide and the annealing is performed at about 800‹C. The sheath 1 may be marked at 7 to indicate where it should be finally removed to expose the threaded end 2 of the terminal lead 1. The element may be inserted into a plate 8 e.g. of an iron before removal of the end of the sheath.
