PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove benzyl chloride from soil and/or an underground water by adding hypochlorous acid, or hypochlorous acid with together an alkali to the soil and/or the underground water containing benzyl chloride. SOLUTION: (1) Sixty grams of 12% sodium hypochlorite are added to 1kg of a test soil conditioned to the elution value of 10ppm of benzyl chloride and this mixture is left alone. (2) Forty grams of 12% sodium hypochlorite and 50g of sodium carbonate are added to 1kg of the test soil conditioned to the elution value of 10ppm of the benzyl chloride and this mixture is left alone. The elution values of benzyl chloride after the mixtures are left alone for one day in (1) and (2) are 0.26ppm and 0.001ppm, respectively. Thus, it is possible to efficiently remove the benzyl chloride contained in the soil and the underground water by using the hypochlorous acid. |
