The housing is opened up by a ram to eject the bale, its baling chamber being enclosed by end walls and at the periphery by a driven transporter mechanism such as endless belts while leaving an inlet free. The inlet is shut by a driven feed rotor. Both belts (6) and rotor (31) are driven continuously during bale-formation and ejection. During bale-formation, the rotor is positively driven, while during ejection it is friction-driven. Drive to it can be by a transmission mechanism incorporating a clutch for the changeover between positive and friction operation, and which is typically controlled by the position of the housing section (3), which swings open. The degree of clutch friction can be adjustable, and the drive to the rotor can be taken from that to the belts.
