PURPOSE:To prevent the destruction of protective film to improve the reliability by specifying the hardness of the protective film on a color filter. CONSTITUTION:On a ferroelectric liquid crystal element 1, a ferroelectric liquid crystal 4 an ball-shaped bead specers 9 are held between a pair of parallel substrates 2 and 3 provided with transparent electrodes 5 and 6, and a color filter 11 and a protective film 10 and provided between at least one electrode 5 and one substrate 2. This film 10 on the filter 11 consists of a transparent resin or a transparent inorganic compound and is formed with >=HB pencil harness (JIS K 5401). Oriented films 7 and 8 are provided between electrodes 5 and 6 and the liquid crystal 4. Since the destruction of the film due to spacers 9 is prevented in this constitution, the element 1 of high reliability is obtained. |
